When the Going Gets Tough: Fostering Resilience in Our Youth

In this training, participants will 1) Increase understanding of resilience and its role in promoting psychological well-being and academic achievement and 2) Review protective and risk factors.

Studies show an increased prevalence of children and adolescents experiencing mental health issues. To counter this growing trend, schools can play a major role in promoting resilience in their students. This training will share current research about resilience, review protective and risk factors, and discuss four cognitive strategies that can improve the mindset and well-being of students. Two of the mindsets include grit and optimism, which have been identified in current research as strong predictors of academic, health, and life success over Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Individuals with an optimistic mindset and grit are better at coping with difficulties and are more likely to persevere when encountering obstacles or setbacks.
