Curriculum Relevant Therapy

From Design to Delivery, The Series

Providing therapy based on the classroom curriculum is an increasingly valuable and relevant way to deliver services to students
with language impairments. This series of workshops builds Speech-Language Pathologists' competence and ability to apply a
variety of curriculum relevant techniques for use in pull-out, consultative, collaborative and classroom-based therapy.

Curriculum Relevant Therapy: Day 1 - The Design
Presenter: Diann Grimm

Intended Audience: Speech-Language Pathologists
Instructional Time: 6 hours

This training will focus on how to design curriculum-relevant therapy for students with specific language impairments. Discussion will include how to use classroom expectations, curriculum materials and California Content Standards to understand and plan for student's language needs. Participants will:

  • Learn how to use the Classroom-Based Language Assessment, a criterion-referenced tool that can help SLSs gather
information from teachers and focus classroom observations to accurately reflect students' language functioning.
  • Understand how to determine and prioritize students language needs
  • Learn how to use meaningful therapy goals and measures of progress directly related to the California Reading/Language Arts Framework Content Standards
  • Develop an understanding of different service delivery models and how to choose the most appropriate model for each student's prioritized language needs

Curriculum Relevant Therapy: Day 2 - The Delivery
Presenter: Diann Grimm

Intended Audience: Speech-Language Pathologists
Instructional Time: 6 hours

This training is a continuation of Curriculum Relevant Therapy: Design. A variety of interventions relevant to curriculum and general education expectations and students' individualized needs will be presented. Participants will:

  • Understand the relationship between the general education curriculum and the needs of students with language impairments
  • Learn numerous evidence-based intervention strategies and techniques that address the language needs of the students
  • Acquire skills in developing intervention strategies that can help students with language impairments be more successful in general education classrooms.

Prerequisite: Attendance at Curriculum Relevant Therapy: Day 1- The Design is required.

Curriculum Relevant Therapy: Day 3 - Continued Discussion
Presenter: Diann Grimm

Intended Audience: Speech-Language Pathologists
Instructional Time: 3 hours

This workshop is designed as a follow-up for Speech-Language Pathologists who attended the two days of Curriculum Relevant Therapy: From Design to Delivery. This presentation will focus on the practical application of CRT theory and practice. Through facilitated discussion, sharing and brainstorming with colleagues, participants will expand their knowledge of CRT techniques. Participants are expected to come prepared with examples from their own experience that will provide "real" challenges for analysis and problem-solving!

Prerequisite: Attendance at Curriculum Relevant Therapy: Day 1 and Day 2 is required.
